A suspended centerpiece, inspired by Pacific navigation.
At the heart of Auckland War Memorial Museum’s Te Ao Mārama South Atrium hangs the Tanoa Bowl, a sculptural ceiling feature that blends culture, engineering, and light.
Its geometric pattern draws from traditional Pacific star maps, echoing the wayfinding knowledge used to navigate the ocean.
Engineered using a custom aluminium frame by Stretchmasters, the structure is formed by 108 Barrisol Lation Gold membrane panels, each backlit to create a warm, ambient glow that complements the surrounding timber architecture.
Beyond aesthetics, performance matters. Integrated Barrisol A20 acoustic perforation ensures sound clarity, maintaining the integrity of the audio-visual experience beneath the installation.
Delivered as part of the 2021 redevelopment led by Jasmax alongside FJMT, designTRIBE, and Salmond Reed Architects, the project is a benchmark in bicultural design—seamlessly weaving heritage with contemporary architecture.
Recognised nationally and globally, Te Ao Mārama received:
– NZIA National Awards: Public Architecture, Heritage, Hospitality
– Best Awards Gold (Public & Institutional Spaces)
– Interior Awards Supreme Winner
– World Architecture Festival (INSIDE): Public Buildings Winner
A ceiling that tells a story of navigation, culture, and innovation.
